Log Size - an explanation
Hi all,
You might have noticed some new bar graphs like these at the top of your detailed stats pages:

These graphs are designed to help you to better understand the log size of your project.
The green area of the bar graph shows you the amount of ‘empty’ slots you have left in your current log. Using this information you can decide whether or not you would like to upgrade your account - remember there is absolutely no pressure on you to do so!
If you click on ‘Adjust your log size here!’ you will see a pie chart - this gives you the same info as the bar graph.

If your log is full and you don’t want to lose any of your detailed data, then it’s time to upgrade. If you don’t mind losing this old data, then no action is required on your part.
We’ve included a Q&A section below covering the most common questions we get asked about the StatCounter log size. As always, you’re more than welcome to post a comment or query about this topic below. For support issues, please contact us here.
Log Size - what’s that?
Your log size reflects the number of ’slots’ that are reserved for you in the StatCounter database. Every time someone views a page on your site, one ’slot’ is populated with information on that pageload. You get 500 slots in the StatCounter database for each project you create. With upgraded accounts you get additional database space, which you can allocate to your projects as you wish.
What happens when the log is full - does it stop tracking? Do I have to upgrade to a paid account?
Absolutely not! When your log becomes full, we simply overwrite the oldest entry in the database, with information on new pageloads you receive. There is no obligation to upgrade.
How many visitors will be recorded by my free account?
StatCounter gives you a log size of 500 with every project created. Unfortunately, it’s not possible to know how many visitors can be recorded in these 500 database slots - it depends on the behaviour of your visitors. For example, if 500 separate people each visit your homepage once, then your log will contain information on all 500 visitors.
If 50 people each visit 10 pages on your site, then your log will contain information on these 50 people.
Why does it matter what my log size is?!
StatCounter gives you lifetime summary stats together with highly detailed analysis of your last 500 pageloads for free accounts (more for upgraded accounts). In other words, your log size determines the amount of detailed analysis you can see on your stats. With a free account, detailed stats (eg Visitor paths, Came From, Keyword Analysis…) will be available for the last 500 pageloads.
NOTE: If you have still have a 100 log free account, then see here to adjust your log!! 500 logs have been available free since May of this year.

Very nice, being able to see log usage via the bar is very useful. I can see at a glance which projects are in need of a greater log size. Nice detailed explanation too, I’ve been guessing and assuming how it all worked up until now.
October 14th, 2007 at 5:49 pm
So, old accounts only have a log size of 100 but new accounts get 500? Should I delete my accounts and start over to get the 500?
StatCounter Team Response:
Of course not Pam!!
Since May of this year, ALL free accounts get a log size of 500. Check out this post to find out how to adjust your log.

Thanks for the clarification.
October 15th, 2007 at 7:31 am
User, I sometimes use Google Analytics in combination with StatCounter, but I never use it alone. Google Analytics simply doesn’t tell me what I want to know. Well, maybe it does, but not in any easu-to-find way.
StatCounter log sizes are fairly straight-forward to adjust, but it’s good to see a blog article like this because if someone asks a search engine for info on the issue then this article should be easy to find and easy to understand. Nice work :p

how can i add statcounter on my wordpress.com blog ?
October 15th, 2007 at 10:11 am
I can’t access http://www.statcounter.com (Firefox can’t establish a connection to the server at http://www.statcounter.com.), you say for support issues contact http://www.statcounter.com/contactus.html.
Does anyone else see a problem with this? I mean if you can’t get to the site then you can’t contact support.
Anyone know what’s going on BTW?
StatCounter Team Response:
Check your email Scott! I’ve sent you a message.
October 15th, 2007 at 11:08 am
Hello,
Thanks for the update. But I think the updated 500 logs are only available for new account. With our existing account its still 100 logs.
thanks

>>500 people x 1 pageload = 500
Oh.. 500 pageload only??
My blog has 600/1000 pageloads everyday. So, Statcounter is not able to keep the log for one day at least??
>>1,500 pageloads for US$89..
So, it can keep my log for 1.5 day?
I didn’t know that 500 is pageloads..
I thought it might be 500MB..
StatCounter Team Response:
Hi Michael,
Nice work with the traffic to your site!
With our free accounts, we provide individual visitor detail on the last 500 pageloads.
We also provide lifetime summary stats, covering the full period since you started tracking with us.
You can of course upgrade to have a longer period of detailed data available to you online, but you can also download your log at regular intervals too.
If you have any more questions on this, please let us know. We would be more than happy to help.
October 16th, 2007 at 4:54 am
Sorry guys but all this means is that I have to look at an annoying red bar every time I check my stats. Seriously, who doesn’t have at least 500 page loads on their site?
Every person’s bar is going to be totally red after like a day so what’s the point? Please allow us to turn that thing off.
StatCounter Team Response:
Hi Court,
LOL! Unfortunately, not all of us get 500 hits a day Court - maybe you could share some advice??!!
The bar chart was added in response to customer demand. People often reset their stats and want to know how much of their log has been ‘used up’ - it’s also important for people who upgrade to larger log sizes. For example, someone who has 10 different projects might upgrade to get an extra 10,000 log - using the bar graphs they can decide how to appropriately allocate this across their different projects (sites). Does that make sense?
Your point re “switching off” the bar chart has been noted - we will see what we can do.
Thanks for your support!

I dont get 500 hits every day but I already have the red bar but
a button on/off for the red bar is a very good solution.
Any way is very good to have the statcounter with 500 hits for free with or without red bar.
It is a very good service.
All the best and I’m waithing for some advise to have 500 hits per day.
October 16th, 2007 at 11:41 pm
Size always matters …..
I don’t get the need for the graphic display though. Once a site hits the 500 visit the bar will stay red continuously as visitors keep feeding it on a daily basis.
An option to turn off this feature would be great.
Still, athough not in the habit of repeating myself, I have to in this instance repeat myself yet again ….. Statcounter provides a great free service that’s second to none. Were I making some serious bucks/euros on the net I would be a signed up member long ago.
Well done ….. Keep it up!
October 17th, 2007 at 4:32 am
Sad to know that. First time, when I got less than 100 visitor/day,
I was very happy with this tools.
I am now generate 1000 visitor/day….
October 17th, 2007 at 5:56 am
Thanks for the bar.. but i dont feel like i’ve much use for that..
may be good for those people who have already upgraded so that they can download their logs for reference.
For those upgraded users in stat counter i think you people have to provide a tool to view the log offline(once its downloaded on to the local computer). I think that can be even started as an open source project
And yaa.. I forgot to say.. I need a link from the blog back to my stat counter account if am logged in.. (I’m logged in when i clicked the blog.. now I’ve a feeling that am out of that SC site.. and is somewhere else.)
*Waiting for those days when SC make the whole service free (LOL)
October 17th, 2007 at 6:10 am
OOps… The last part about the blog… I mean The stat counter blog…
There is no option (atleast i cant find one.) to go back to the account settings of SC from the SC blog.
October 17th, 2007 at 5:13 pm
Have to second that of the above request to be able to turn this off. The red bar attracts the eye without fail and provides no useful information to anyone hitting 500+ hits per day. Please rethink or at least make it an optional feature.
October 17th, 2007 at 10:40 pm
Thanks for that info.
October 18th, 2007 at 3:11 am
Yes as mentioned by some folks it would be nice to be receiving 500 views per day. The simple bar is a great idea since the colours are a much easier visual cue to your status.
October 18th, 2007 at 4:31 am
I have the exact same problem as posted by Scott Pritchett. (October 15th, 2007 at 10:11 am)
What’s going on? It’s been like this for a couple of weeks at least.
StatCounter Team Response:
Hi Adele - email sent.
October 18th, 2007 at 2:37 pm
Oh! I thought that 500 log = 500 people :D.
It is not a good news for me but thanks for the clearing.
October 18th, 2007 at 6:31 pm
Hello,
Thanks for the update. But I think the updated 500 logs are only available for new account. With our existing account its still 100 logs.
Thanks
StatCounter Team Response
Hi PL,
For an answer to your query, look at some of the other posts above here and here.
Thanks for your support!
October 19th, 2007 at 2:58 pm
I have to agree with others, please provide an option to turn the red bar off. I don’t want to see it every time I log in. If you’d rather keep the advertising for a bigger log size, then I guess I understand, but it definitely is an annoyance right now.
StatCounter Team Response
Hi LSC,
We will look at providing a switch off option for this.
In the meantime, however, if you could do your best to just ignore the bar, we’d be grateful! It has proved useful for a lot of our members, but we do appreciate the differing opinions too.
October 20th, 2007 at 10:28 am
Thanks for providing a great service for free. I wondered how my log size is increased. Just saw your post.
October 22nd, 2007 at 6:15 am
You should consider offering discounted annual plans. I bet a lot of people don’t want to deal with a monthly payment but would certainly consider paying annually, especially if it’s discounted!
October 22nd, 2007 at 3:24 pm
Thank you for increasing the log size and for providing these handy bars. I love Statcounter. Keep up the good work!
October 23rd, 2007 at 7:09 pm
Thanks for the info. I was wondering what happend when the log was full?
StatCounter Team Response:
When the log is full Joanne, the oldest entries in the log are overwritten by new entries. That’s all. Tracking is unaffected.
October 25th, 2007 at 7:01 am
This even adds up to your ever increasing awesome service that you are providing us.
October 27th, 2007 at 4:30 pm
I am looking for a stats counter to count multiple web-sites with international traffic in a single account and do basic traffic profiling (channel efficiency, online marketing ROI). Is StatCounter the type of thing that can help?
thnx in advance!
StatCounter Team Response:
We allow you to track multiple websites within one account and we offer a variety of stats. For a full feature list please click here.
October 27th, 2007 at 11:07 pm
Can we do something for not counting in stats, home @IP?
Thank you
Denis
StatCounter Team Response:
1. Go to ‘My Projects’
2. Click the ‘wrench icon’ next to your project
3. Click the “edit settings” link
4. Add your ip address to the blocked list
5. Hit Submit
October 28th, 2007 at 6:30 am
Well, it took me a little while to get used to his new service that you have offered.
But, to tell you the truth it was all worth the effort.
Thank you StatCounter Team.
You guys are the best.

Can I delete my log size so it’s back to zero so I am able to see where recent page loads came from? This seems to be kind of annoying; like all of a sudden information is being hidden that we were previously able to view. If there’s a way to delete the log size to start over so we can see who is coming to our page, that would be great!? Thanks!
November 8th, 2007 at 6:45 am
Hello admin,
I have one question.
Is there any function so that we empty the log which has been full?
Thank you.
StatCounter Team Response:
Hi WD,
You CAN empty the log if you like - Go to My Projects > Install Code and Customise Project Settings > Reset Stats - but BE CAREFUL - you can’t get these stats back once you reset. Resetting your stats deletes ALL stats right back to zero.
You DON’T NEED TO RESET the log though - once the log is full, older entries are simply overwritten by new entries.
Hope that explains! Thanks for your support.
November 8th, 2007 at 10:32 am
I still don’t understand …. what is the purpose of the log size “bar” ? of course it indicates how much “slots” available, but once it is full, it is always full (unless you upgrade it, but again, once it full, it always full). Is there any feature to let us to “clear” the log file and start from zero ? So it can make this log size “bar” indicator more meaningful.
just my 2 cents.
thanks
StatCounter Team Response:
Hi!
To clear the log file go to My Projects > Install Code and Customise Project Settings > Reset Stats - but BE CAREFUL - you can’t get these stats back once you reset. Resetting your stats deletes ALL stats right back to zero.
You DON’T NEED TO RESET the log though - once the log is full, older entries are simply overwritten by new entries.
The “bar” is useful for new members and for members who upgrade. It helps people to understand the idea of log files a bit more easily and it prevents people from “losing” stats when they don’t upgrade in time. That’s all.
Hope that explains! Thanks for your support.
November 9th, 2007 at 10:40 am
congratulations to the statcounter team for getting in to a PR of 10!
You people deserve it.!
November 9th, 2007 at 4:42 pm
Thanks for explaining the log size, but I don’t see the purpose of the bar as it’s always full.
StatCounter Team Response:

I READ THIS BEFORE I SIGNED-UP:
“You can use it for free for as long as you like. The only catch is if you start to get over 9,000 pageloads each day you are outside what we can sustain as a free business model and we will then ask you to either remove the code or upgrade. It’s as simple as that!”
THIS IS WHY I SIGNED UP FOR THE SERVICE, IN ANTICIPATION OF MY SITE’S FUTURE GROWTH. NOW I’M NOT SURE I WILL STICK WITH THIS BECAUSE OF HOW YOU MISREPRESENTED THE POLICY, AS NOW I FIND OUT THE LIMIT IS ONLY 500 PAGEVIEWS.
StatCounter Team Response:
Hi AMS,
Apologies for any confusion, but there was no misrepresentation.
With a free account you get lifetime summary stats - this covers all hits from the time you open your account - plus you get detailed individual stats on your past 500 pageloads.
If a site is getting over 9,000 pageloads a day on a FREE StatCounter account, we reserve the right to ask you to remove the code or upgrade. That’s because the processing power that is needed to track the 9,000+ pageloads is more than we can sustain with the free accounts. Plus, by the time you are getting 9,000+ pageviews per day, your site is most likely making a few bob, so hopefully you’ll be willing and able to pay a small charge to continue with StatCounter.
So the 500 refers to the detail that you get in your stats, it’s not an activity threshold - does that explain? Please get back to us if you have any further questions.
Thanks for your support.
November 15th, 2007 at 10:56 am
Its very is very useful being able to see log usage via the bar. I can see which projects are in need of a greater log size. And thank you for still delivering this service for free. You guys are the best.
November 15th, 2007 at 4:13 pm
Great tools, especially for free! Really helps with marketing. You always have access to your last 500 page loads? Thanks guys this is really appreciated. I will be recommending you in my articles.
November 15th, 2007 at 9:56 pm
I can see that graph being useful for upgraded members with a huge log quota, but it’s not much use for me. First, I don’t care that much about detailed statistics (I’m fine with the summary anyway), second, it fills up very fast, and stays that way forever, once your page has over 500 views. It doesn’t really bother me though…
Hm, since it’s my first time ever commenting on this blog, might as well say that StatCounter is great, the best of counters I’ve tried.
November 16th, 2007 at 6:52 pm
I am Statcounter user, i have 5 blogs and all of them are monitored by Statcounter. I wonder if you could make a new feature: No of Views (xxx). So that blogger can place it on each blog post, so the visitor knows how many people visited that post. Since Statcounter has the feature to rate top visited page, then how about using that value for “no of views”. It should be like a counter, changing its number automatically. I am just giving you idea that i have, i really dont have any programming knowledge. This is only a suggestion, since i am Statcounter user i love to see some new features. Of course Statcounter has a lot of features and that this is HIGH ranked site monitoring site. I hope you will consider my suggestion.
Thanking you,
Hariharakumar.

Hi there,
I don’t have a problem with the bar being added. It is helpful. My log was full so I cleared out my stats. Prior to, and ever since then, the location and hostname areas of my log have been reading ‘loading’ and ‘resolving’ continuously….not allowing me to see where my site visitors are coming from. Is this a reported issue, or just a temporary glich? Is anyone else having this problem?
Great service otherwise by the way. Thank you….Ronnie

I am shocked at all those people with sites getting hundred (if not thousands) of web hits daily complaining about your excellent free service. Thank you for the bar. It is extremely helpful for us small-timers. Thank you for your excellent service. If I ever need more than I get for free I will have reached a level of success for a website that I will be more than happy to pay for an upgrade. Then if the service I get is lousy i will complain! ;-).

Keep up the good work - well done.
