A few months back, StatCounter was approached by an advertiser, offered lots of $$$, and asked to include a spyware cookie on all of our member sites…we refused on the spot.
You install StatCounter to track visitors to your site NOT to open yourself and your visitors up to being spied upon by phantom advertising corporations.
It appears, however, that other players in the world of webstats were happy to take up this offer…
We were shocked to discover just today that another well known stats provider is allowing up to 9 cookies to be installed in the browser of every visitor that hits one of their member websites. This means that the provider is making money by transmitting data on you and your visitors to a third party advertiser. Not only that, but to add insult to injury, the cookies are causing the member websites to load very slowly too.
In light of this, StatCounter wants to assure you that we track your visitors for you, only you and not any one else.
Which provider would you prefer??

I have been a StatCounter member for several years now and have always been VERY pleased with the services, fast loading code, and awesome up time. I thank you for saying “NO” and for continuing to keep Stat Counter a high quality website tracking product. I might only be a paid subscriber half of the year during my busy season, but I wouldn’t think of going anywhere else.

Glad to hear it, though “Statcounter says NO!” made me think I was being told “no” and wonder what I’d done wrong.
That’s good of you to do so, but why tell us?
I mean why not give some proof of said “advertiser” and said “stat tracker”. I mean without evidence it’s all allegation, and essentially just a PR move on your part. Nonetheless it seems to have worked, so congratulations – whoever manages your PR gets praise and applause from me!
Stat Counter is a fantastic service. And I’m glad to here that you have rejected the advertiser request. Internet spys, spamers, popups and bad cookie are parasites of the internet and the providers of such things sould be punished. I think if people are made aware of companies like this they won’t last for long out there anyway. I guess that’s why I found StatCounters website to be so good it is a quality service and they would be crazy to destroy there website for a few $$$$.
That’s one reason I originally switched to Statcounter several years ago–I got tired of my counters suddenly hijacking my page with popups and other junk.

I’ve been using Statcounter for years, and I’m very happy with it.
Good to hear that statcounter is staying ethical. It will pay dividends in time… will have to click on those google ads more often to help pay your bills.
Since I am just a visitor I can probably get away with this. And it’s something I think the community should be aware of this.
