StatCounter Says NO!

A few months back, StatCounter was approached by an advertiser, offered lots of $$$, and asked to include a spyware cookie on all of our member sites…we refused on the spot.

You install StatCounter to track visitors to your site NOT to open yourself and your visitors up to being spied upon by phantom advertising corporations.

It appears, however, that other players in the world of webstats were happy to take up this offer…

We were shocked to discover just today that another well known stats provider is allowing up to 9 cookies to be installed in the browser of every visitor that hits one of their member websites. This means that the provider is making money by transmitting data on you and your visitors to a third party advertiser. Not only that, but to add insult to injury, the cookies are causing the member websites to load very slowly too.

In light of this, StatCounter wants to assure you that we track your visitors for you, only you and not any one else.

Which provider would you prefer??

StatCounter says No!

By the way, welcome to our new blog 😉

  1. I’m impressed not only by your decision, but by your integrity, and willingness to discuss issues here – many similar organisations might provide a similar blog, but they do nothing other than put their own views up to start with, and sometimes don’t even provide for responses. So a pat on the back to the team for being so connected to your members (paid up or otherwise)!!. Now I’m away to sort out my own cookies – maybe that will let me access the net a shade faster than presently LOL. THANKS! :))

  2. Thank you so much for saying no and providing us with an exceptional service. This is just another reason why I love using your site! I’ll keep recommending it to others too! Thank you.

  3. Kudos for not following suit. We were running both Sitemeter and Statcounter, and noticed some funny redirect-style behavior last week. Tracked it down — sure, enough, it was goddam Sitemeter. I deleted the code from our blog template immediately.

Keep up the great work with Statcounter.

  4. I am glad you haven’t accepted the $$$$ but I’ve never had a problem with you service. But what does annoy me is the way that Spybot Search and Destroy continues to delete your cookies as spy ware when it isn’t.

I have already posted on your forum how to take you site out of the banned website list in IE6 when a member has a problem login in and viewing their stats due to using the immunise section of SSaD

  5. Cheers Melanie!

    Really appreciate your post.

Wishing you continued good luck with your site!
