Apologies for the hiatus in communication. Over the last few weeks the whole team has been engrossed in the new design for StatCounter…

While private beta testing has been ongoing for some time now, we’re delighted to announce the public launch of the beta site today.

(NOTE: By “beta site” we mean a “preview” of the new StatCounter site. The “look and feel” of the site are close to how we expect the final version to be, however, regular design changes and bug fixes can be expected as we hear feedback from you, our members.)

New Look and Improved Features

As well as a fresh new look, the beta site boasts many improvements and new features including:

  • Date Range Selector for all stats – identify, for example, which Search Engines were used to find your site yesterday. Or last week. Or compare last week and this week. Etc.
  • Simplified Code Generation Process – get your code more quickly. Reinstallation is much easier too.
  • Quicker Sign Up for New Members – fewer clicks, more intuitive process – now you can feel even better about recommending us to your friends and colleages 😉
  • Hourly Stats – based on the log file – watch the hour-by-hour traffic trends on your site.
  • Project Dropdown List – simply toggle between your projects when viewing your stats.
  • Improved Browser Stats – now it’s even easier to monitor the most popular browser families and browser versions used to view your site.

We are all well aware of the many botched redesigns that have taken place on various websites over the years… please be assured that we have NO intention of suffering the same fate! The site redesign was undertaken simply and solely to improve StatCounter for you, our members, in response to the many requests and comments you submitted. We hope we have managed to achieve a fresh but familiar look. You will also note that we are *not* imposing this redesign on you! Instead, the new design continues as an optional beta allowing us to iron our any remaining bugs or problems before the new site eventually goes live.

PLEASE use this beta testing period to become familiar with the new StatCounter design. Please also submit your feedback (good and bad!) to allow us to fine-tune the new site according to your preferences.

The beta version of StatCounter is COMPLETELY optional at the moment. We are *not* imposing this new design on you – instead we have presented you with a new version of the site which we are changing and tweaking according to your feedback!

To Paypal or NOT to Paypal…

Quite unbelievably, despite reporting a problem to Paypal on 26 August, we have STILL not received confirmation that this problem has been resolved. Here’s the background…

    On 26 August we identified a serious problem with Paypal.

    StatCounter members who had upgraded in the previous few days had NOT been appropriately upgraded as the Paypal system stopped sending out subscription payment notifications. In fact new subscriptions were no longer created at all and payments received were not linked to StatCounter accounts.

    In short, we were receiving hundreds of Paypal payments which we couldn’t link to any StatCounter account. As you can imagine, this caused serious difficulties for us.

    We reported the problem to Paypal with as much supporting evidence as possible to assist them in quickly identifying the problem… but, as we have come to expect, the first response from Paypal completely ignored the information we supplied and denied the problem.

    It’s now 5 WEEKS since we reported this issue to Paypal and we have STILL not received confirmation that this problem has been resolved. We feel we have been more than patient at this stage and remain astounded that any company can treat its customers with such disregard.

While we understand that ALL services can have problems from time to time we find Paypal’s habit of ignoring its customers to be abhorrent. We are particularly upset that Paypal’s poor behaviour can and does impact on you, our members, and also unfairly reflects on us.


Our Position
As a result of this Paypal problem, we had to manually examine hundreds of payments, attempt to link these to StatCounter accounts and where this wasn’t possible we had to contact the payees individually to request their StatCounter usernames. As you can imagine, this had a high cost for us in terms of time and resources. Further, although these problems were caused by Paypal, StatCounter has absorbed all the costs of this problem. We also felt it was only right for us to offer all affected members a free upgrade for one month to make amends for the problems. Paypal, of course, offered us (their customer) absolutely nothing by way of assistance for the trouble they caused us.

Unfortunately, we have been here before… At that time, we decided NOT to remove Paypal as a payment option for new subscribers. This was because we highly value each of our members and, despite OUR poor opinion of Paypal, we have to cater to what YOU, our members want. However, we are now again considering our position in relation to Paypal…

Your Feedback Please
Due to the problems outlined above, Paypal has been suspended as a payment option (for NEW subscriptions) on StatCounter since 26 August and remains so. We can’t possibly reactivate it until such time as Paypal confirms that the problems introduced in August have been fixed… but we have no idea when that will be. In the meantime, we’d like to ask you, our members, for your thoughts on this.

Both problems we have had with PayPal have been with their subscription payments. During this problem and the last one, regular Paypal manual payments appeared to be functioning normally. On this basis, we are wondering if we should STOP accepting PayPal subscriptions and accept only manual payments instead? Manual payments *would* require our upgraded customers to log in to Paypal every time a payment falls due… so perhaps we will have to restrict Paypal upgrades to quarterly or yearly – logging in every month to pay could be a bit too time consuming! We’re not sure about this idea, so do let us know your thoughts!

We’d also love to know what alternative payment options we can introduce to cater for your payment preferences.

Here are our initial thoughts…

  • We need to accept Discover cards – if you can recommend an acquirer for a European company, please let us know
  • We need to accept AMEX for USD payments – currently we can only accept AMEX directly for EUR payments
  • We need to accept echecks – please let us know if you can recommend any echeck processors

Note that we already accept VISA, Mastercard, AMEX (for EUR payments), wire/bank transfer, EUR/USD checks/cheques.

UPDATE: Please note that existing, active Paypal subscriptions are not affected by the suspension of Paypal on StatCounter – this affects NEW subscriptions only.

Upgrades Just Got Better

As part of our ongoing efforts to offer you, our members, the best service we can, we are proud to announce the following improvements to our upgraded services:

One Million Logs!
As a result of strong demand we are introducing a range of large log size upgrades. These upgrades have been made possible by the terrific work of our tech team who have fine-tuned our servers and architecture and converted us on to the new SC4 platform…  so for the first time ever you can now have 1,000,000 logs!

Upgrades to 200,000; 300,000; 500,000 and 1 million are now available.

How do I assign additional log quota to my projects?
Log into StatCounter, go to the My Projects page and click the “Adjust Log” link at the top of the page.


Please explain a FREE account – what do I get?
With FREE accounts, you get LIFETIME summary stats AND 500 logs for every project/website in your account. Lifetime Summary Stats mean you can monitor hits, uniques and returning visitors for your site forever, right from when you begin tracking with StatCounter. With the 500 logs, you can monitor DETAILED stats on the last 500 hits on your site e.g. keywords, referring links and visitor paths. We do NOT stop tracking after 500 hits. When your log reaches capacity, old information is overwritten by new information so that you *always* have detailed stats on the most recent 500 hits on your site.


Please explain an UPGRADED account – what do I get?
With UPGRADED accounts, you can store a larger amount of detailed stats for your site. You can buy additional log quota for your account starting from $5 per month for 5000 logs. Essentially you are renting more space on our servers and this allows you to store a longer history of stats online. If you get 5000 hits per month, then upgrading to 5000 logs will allow you to store one month of detailed stats in StatCounter. Upgraded accounts ALSO allow offer optional daily email reports, a custom banner option to allow you to brand your StatCounter account with your own logo and access to HTTPS tracking.


How do I upgrade?
Upgrading is easy! Just log in to StatCounter and click the “upgrade” link in the top navigation bar. We accept payment by credit card, paypal, bank transfer (annual payments only) and cheque/check (annual payments only).


How do I change my upgrade plan?
To CHANGE your upgrade plan, just log in to StatCounter and click the “upgrade” link in the top navigation bar – this NEW upgrade will replace your existing upgrade and means we will cancel your existing subscription and arrange any credit due.


Mathematical Semantics…
For the purposes of clarity and as a result of some comments received, please consider our improvement of the 100k upgrade to 200k.The increase is 100k i.e. 100%. (You get 100% extra free). Equally, you can say that the upgrade has been improved by a factor of 200%.(Your upgrade is now 200% better or twice as good.) The increase is 100%; the upgrade has been increased by 200% – both are equivalent.


I have just upgraded to 10,000 logs today – I thought I would get 25,000 instead – what’s wrong?
Let’s try to clear up the confusion that has arisen surrounding our service improvements…

In the past the following upgrades were available:

  • $9 per month for 1500 logs
  • $19 per month for 10,000 logs
  • $29 per month for 25,000 logs

NOW

  • $9 per month gets you 10,000 logs (8,500 more logs at NO extra cost)
  • $19 per month gets you 25,000 logs (15,000 more logs at NO extra cost)
  • $29 per month gets you 50,000 logs (25,000 more logs at NO extra cost)

If you had an upgraded account BEFORE 19 August when we announced these improvements, then we added extra logs to your account.

If you have upgraded AFTER 19 August, then you automatically go straight to the new pricing structure outlined above – no additional logs are due as you get the above great value services immediately.

Facelift – Beta Testing in progress

Beta testing of the new StatCounter interface is well underway… so we’d like to say a HUGE thank you to all our dedicated beta testers – your feedback is crucial and we are so grateful for all the time and effort you are putting in.

If you have signed up for the beta but haven’t yet received an invitation – don’t worry! We’re still bringing new tranches of testers on board every few days… so keep an eye on your inbox!

Selection of Feedback

Here is a selection of the feedback (good and bad!) received so far:

  • The look of the site is too similar (tabs at top) to too many other sites. The unique (but space effective and imho easy to use anyway) layout of the old site is much more favoured... and after the feedback was taken on board and changes implementedI do not think now the new design is too much of a shock nor adjustment to old users 🙂
  • This page -magnifying user is much better set out. Far easier to read!
  • I like the multi-line layout and indentation on long referral URLs – much easier to read without the horizontal scrolling
  • Love the date range at the top of lots of the detailed stats pages
  • The new interface is excellent. Nice and bright and very easy to read. It’s more compact and I do love the colours and brightness. It’s very modern and up to date in all ways.
  • At first glance I am not sure about the layout. I am sure I will get used to this as we do have to ‘move with the times’ so to speak. I know many will say “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” but yes, you have to move on and the new site overall is exciting. Initially, I do prefer the old visitor paths as all appeared to be in-line and easier to read.
  • Well, overall having studied, and used, the beta version for a while now, I give it 99%. The only thing I do NOT like is the layout of the visitor paths.
  • The new design is awesome, I like the whole thing about it. It’s clean, easy to understand and way better than the old design.
  • This is NICE! Fresh, yet familiar. Everything is much easier to read and is simplified. Good job!
  • I have to be honest-the full screen layout in the old design worked better for me.
  • I am loving the new site. The new design is a lot slicker. The only feedback I have is that sometimes I feel there is a little colour clashing
  • i am very pleased with the new look of statcounter and further impressed that there were no drops in my downloading speed of the page!
  • Maybe looks more up to date, sexy grey and shading etc, but my first reaction is to reach for the view settings to try and make it all smaller on the screen so I can see more. I really like the way that original SC (OSC) is crammed packed with small type and links
  • I have made a permanent switch to the beta. It’s still working very well.
  • Congratulations!!!!!!!! StatCounter now has the look this incredible service deserves. It actually IS both new and extremely familiar.
  • One thing I really enjoy about StatCounter pre-beta is its page openness and light feel. This is lost in the beta, and it feels like a lot of work to find the data that used to be easy to locate.
  • Data looks good, but the design’s a bit 2008
  • Just wanted to tell you again how much I like everything. Wish I could say the same for a number of other sites that I visit often that have done ‘makeovers’. Keep up the good work!

As you can see, the majority of feedback has been really positive – something that we are delighted about. Had the opposite been true, we would simply have had to bin the new design and start over! After all, we’re not doing it to make the site look pretty or so we can try out our design skills or experiment with new technologies … we’re doing this update to make using StatCounter a better experience for YOU. Period.

“If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it!”

The above comment is a recurring one on our last post – please rest assured that we have heard your concerns. We have no intention of jeopardising StatCounter for you in any way. We frequently get support requests for features that already exist.

For example, did you know that you can choose to display pageloads OR uniques on the My Projects page??

Or how about the fact that you can restore deleted projects for 6 weeks after deletion?


It’s simply not acceptable that many features are not obvious to our members and we are determined to put that right with the updated website.

We are also ACUTELY aware of the bad experiences many of you have had when online services do “updates” that seem to do more harm than good… Again, please be assured that we are doing and will do everything in our power to make the transition to the updated site as smooth as possible for everyone. We firmly believe that, when handled correctly, site updates can be successful and beneficial for all users and this is what we are hoping to achieve.

Remember, this update is happening simply and solely to make StatCounter better for you, our members. Most of the changes being made are happening as a direct result of feedback we have received from you over the last 12 months. If you haven’t already, please consider signing up as a beta tester – together, we can improve StatCounter all round and the more opinons in the melting pot, the better!

StatCounter Facelift!
We’re currently updating StatCounter – the new site will have a fresh, modern look; it will be more user-friendly and hopefully will make using StatCounter an even better experience. Our new interface will also give us flexibility to continue to improve the service we offer.

Help Please!
Internal testing of the new site has been ongoing for some time… but NOW we need YOUR HELP!

We’d love to get feedback from a really broad range of people from beginners, all the way up to advanced users.

It would also be great to hear from anyone with a blog or website, who is NOT yet using StatCounter but would like to join up.
