Interesting. I see way too many negative stats for FF and Safari. Why are they losing users?
IE seems pretty stable. Could be the built-in user base they get from WIN OS. Since to use FF or any of these other browsers you have to go get the download. I know lots of people use IE because its there and they don’t care they are not using FF or Safari or Chrome. Lots of businesses I have worked in the past use Netscape. I think our local GOV ofcs use Netscape or at least did use it last time I went online in a local gov ofc.

I wonder what the German stats look like … I guess FF has a much bigger market share. In the first days of chrome mainly webmasters and bloggers used chrome in order to see if their sites work in chrome too.
September 12th, 2008 at 5:49 pm
I use FF and IE, and now I am using Chrome 50% of the time. I like it and expect it to improve even more. When will IE start adding something useful to the tab page like Chrome has done? It is such a time-saver.
IE seems to be going in the opposite direction. They are focusing on eliminating your search history rather than optimizing your “go to” list.
September 12th, 2008 at 5:59 pm
Was expecting it to grow much faster than that. Might take a while to achieve web browser domination than I thought. Good Luck Google.
September 12th, 2008 at 6:21 pm
Is there any chance we could add a Total change at the bottom of each table?
September 12th, 2008 at 6:40 pm
The total change idea is a good one. It should be total change since Chrome was released.
I expect Chrome to do better among nerdy-types after a few updates. I’ve had it freeze up a few times, but it’s been mostly reliable. Most regular people don’t know or care how their browser handles things. Chrome is a good addition to the suite of software that Google can use for their over-the-network OS (to go along with Google Docs, Gmail, Google Earth, Google Notebook, and all their other stuff).
September 12th, 2008 at 7:16 pm
I have noticed that with the upgrade to Firefox 3, my xanga no longer tracks those hits. This troubles me greatly. Can anyone tell me if there is a stat counter fix to ensure that the hit count on my page is accurate?
Thanks.

Why is that even though the number of page views is huge (on the order of 10^8), the fluctuations in IE’s are on the order of several percent? (Between 0.6315 and 0.6859.)
That fluctuation just seems way too large for so many page views … especially since I do not expect the majority of users changing their browsers.
September 12th, 2008 at 10:25 pm

September 13th, 2008 at 12:47 am
@Jay While this may be true. Once Chrome gets more market share you may need to have your site display properly in Chrome. I know this is a current struggle for designers getting the page to load correctly in IE, FF, Opera and Safari.
September 13th, 2008 at 1:14 am
Hey Kenneth,
You should look at IE8 Beta 2. You’d be surprised how far microsoft has come. This is not the IE of old…Give it a whirl. It’s not FF or Chrome, but it ain’t half bad.
September 13th, 2008 at 2:14 am
@Dan
You people are aware that Chrome is built on Apple’s open source WebKit HTML rendering engine, the same one used in Safari, right? Sites that have already been written with Safari compatibility in mind should work fine in Chrome. Using Safari 4 with the current WebKit actually scores 100/100 on the Acid3.
September 13th, 2008 at 2:19 am
As expected, most people who tried Chrome reverted soon after to their normal browsers. But gaining above 1 percent market share right away is a huge leap for Chrome as well. 1% market share isn’t a small number.
September 13th, 2008 at 3:29 am
If others who downloaded Google Chrome got annoyed at the lack of adblocking like me and installed Privoxy, then StatCounter is underreporting the number of Chrome users since Privoxy blocks StatCounter by default.
September 13th, 2008 at 3:30 am
Thanks. As an ASP.Net web developer, this data is important to me. It’s a question of having to re-code or not and that entirely depends on how much market share chrome has. Certainly it does not work 100% with the websites that i have worked on.
I made my own review of chrome a few days after it was released from an ASP.Net developer’s perspective. Not exhaustive but it reveals initial problems developers like me would encounter. You can read it here http://alainrivas.blogspot.com/2008/09/aspnet-developers-assesment-on-chromes.html

I’m trying IE8 b2, I like it so far.
September 13th, 2008 at 5:46 am
The thing is most common people does not take their time or not interested in downloading or installing or even knowing about these things. They simply use the preinstalled ie6.
September 13th, 2008 at 5:58 am
Chrome is a good browser, but I don’t like it blue… I could not seem to find the part to change the skin color. Perhaps that feature is not done yet?
Also, I noticed that Chrome was eating up more than 100+MB of space in the windows temporary folder. And it is NOT the temporary internet files. FF was just using 35MB and Opera just 15MB. IE, I only use it to test my sites… haha.
And Chrome seems to lag a bit during page displays.
So I dumbed Chrome. Sorry… I am still with FF and Opera. Maybe until Chrome releases a full and kick ass version. It has potential but right now, in my book, it’s still behind.
September 13th, 2008 at 6:50 am

Sp2 needed
I’ll stay with Mozilla Firebird, good old fast browser with some good plugins still working and 0,00001% of people using it. Noone creates spyware specially for this uncontinued browser so I don’t need SP2, I barely use Spybot or Ad Aware.

There have been issues over the past couple of weeks which may have impacted on confidence in Google Chrome amongst Aol users who maintain a presense on their free webspace provided by Aol hometown uk.
The blacklisting of Hometown caused outrage and mistrust of Google amongst the vast majority of people who keep a clean, innocent website there.
This could well have led to a mistrust of browsers that attempt to classify how “safe” a website is. The US seems to register a fairly massive swing from FF to IE. The “tarring all with the same brush” attack on Hometown by google will not sit well with Aol users and the many visitors to their sites who know the pages they visit are safe.
It seems the blacklisting has been removed, but the reason behind the whole event has turned around and splashed a large dish of irony Google’s way.

It is faster but lacks some functionality: Is it not possible to edit pages in Google Groups, there are lack of tools and addons, even the Google Toolbar is not available for Chrome.
You have saw an increase in usage of people just testing, prety soon they will be bored and back to the old FF, it seems that IE users are not interested so far.

September 13th, 2008 at 9:54 pm
I dunno folks. I beg to differ on the overall usage stats. Opera has a far larger share than is represented in those stats.
Chrome although offering a few cool toys, hasn’t really done anything that isn’t already being done at least as well or better by other browsers.
Memory usage for Chrome compared to Opera 9.52 was a bit slimmer, but when compared side by side in page load times, Chrome fails badly.
Rendering is still pretty buggy. More research, more developement is needed before I worry about making my site compatible with what looks to be a “fly-by-night” offering. (It took months and and my site still isn’t 100% x-browser compliant between IE, FF and Opera. And nevermind validating my pages. They weren’t designed that way hahahahaha)
Google seems to be biting off way more than hey can chew as of late.
September 14th, 2008 at 7:24 am
Well, i tested it myself and then moved to the old browser. IE, dont ask me why, i always go back to IE, my mouse move to that shourtcut alone!
Chrome still need more work, i think they missed some managerial issues, they must at least included the google toolbar, page rank issues, they maybe need to contact alexa to creat a toolbar working with chrome, i know alot wont use it because of such reasons.
lets wait and see what changes will arise.
Wish you will keep posting those out, so we keep watching the movement.
Thanx

Google couldn’t ask for a better start, gaining a 1.11% share in the first day itself. That speaks volumes of the kind of name they have worldwide. Quite a bit of damage seems to have been done on Firefox. I find it surprising that Chrome has a greater share in the UK than the US.

I would put on the 1 place FF. It is speedy and safe. 2 place Opera with lust update were they fix downloading crash ))). IE I would put on the last place, especially 7. Very stupid and slowly in use.
September 16th, 2008 at 11:21 am
Opportunity missed by Google Chrome.
I’m surprised they haven’t pushed it more. They put it on the Google page briefly, then pulled it… and I barely noticed the small static ad on the main search page. Wow, huge opportunity missed.
They could have put a beautiful flash banner on google.com - complete break of style, etc (would cause uproar? but gets attention!), but if you want to launch a new browser, you need to advertise it heavily — and Google have that ability more than anyone - for free, no less. So what are they doing?
As a regular marketer/promoter of websites and retail products, I’m confused. As a web programmer, I’ll seriously test out my websites for compatibility with IE 6&7, FF, Opera and Safari. If I find a bug specifically with Chrome, at 1%, I won’t break myself to find and fix it.

I like Chrome. Not surprised at the stats though. The masses are going to continue using what is already installed on their computer. The techies are going to try Chrome but most are going to stick with FF and their add-ons. Eventually Chrome will take over more, but it’s going to be very difficult to unseat IE in the Windows world.

Chrome doesn’t work well with the StatCounter link. Even can’t be used to log on to the StatCounter site.
Don’t know why the problem, but, I prefer Internet Explorer.

I personally love Chrome, its clean and simple and really haven’t found too many bugs yet. I especially like the visual layout when you open up a new tab…wasted space in other browsers but super helpful in Chrome.

I have statcounter installed on my blog and I love it! Thank you so much.
I was wondering, though, does statcounter keep track of the people who look at my blog on Google Reader or only people who come to my actual blog?

Another observation.
In system stats, When I try to see the screen resolution of the surfers, It only shows resolutions of monitors with 4:3 aspect ratio. I suppose that all the LCD widescreen resolutions, show up as “Unknown”. Am I right?
Also, do you plan on adding a feature that covers the LCD widescreen 16:9 resolutions?
BTW, Thanks.
You are giving a great service, your counter rocks.

March Of The Lemmings: Personally I don’t care to give one more shred of my internet behavior for Google to track with their Chrome browser. I don’t need their ‘Search Suggestions’ to correlate with their best AdWords revenue generators, or my browsing and search history to feed Googles ravenous Data Miners. I don’t need Analytics gathering even more detail on my websites to be used to ‘punish’ my site traffic and position on a whim. <– That is after all, why I dumped Analytics and switched to StatCounter.
Jeeze People: Just how much more of your internet life are you willing to hand over to The Google?

I think Google pulled the promotion of Chrome because they don’t yet want more than one percent of the market.
They probably want to iron out most of the bugs on a small beta segment of the market before launching to a broader audience.

I like the look and feel of Chrome but I have noticed that since I started using it, my Vista Business BSODs about once a week. I’m willing to give it time to mature, but unless they address the privacy concerns more aggressively than they have done, the market will not wait for them to get the bugs out.

In my own opinion IE is the most easiest and stable web browser I used it for web development. The more simple the thing the more better, chrome developers just thinks as FireFox’s I like the ZooM in IE I like the search In IE chrome is the fastest no way. but it still beta I think the Alpha version will be more powerful than this beta one.
At the End I’m still using IE

I downloaded Chrome about 10 days ago. I have tried IE, Safari, Opera and Mozilla. I wanted to try Chrome out. I still have it, it is developing into my favorite browser after the initial set up time - favorite sites, etc. I am going to stick with this browser- it seems faster, brings up your favourites quicker, easier and gives you more screen real estate. Till now I have had no pbs with pop_ups etc . Still a beta, but so is Gmail after approx 3 years.
Google has got it right again.

Hi,
Thanks for sharing these stats - any chance, on Oct 1, of publishing the Chrome stats for all of Sept?

Cheers and many thanks

October 3rd, 2008 at 11:16 am
Seems like Chrome has put up some stiff competition for FireFox, even though it is a fraction of FF’s downloads. Chrome is the only browser that seems to have risen globally. Probably a sign of the slow but steady growth of it’s acceptance among users.
October 6th, 2008 at 2:00 pm
As I thought, majority will choose Chrome maybe due to its light weight in size. But I am still using Firefox because I really rely on Firefox plug in. For sure, I will switch to Chrome if there are plug in available for Chrome. But until now, Chrome still don’t have any plug in and I can’t use Google toolbar in Chrome even it produced by Google
October 8th, 2008 at 7:48 am
I prefer firefox due to its stability , speed. I.E is just too slow, surprising to see it still has nearly 60% of the market share. It could be due to the fact that windows has larger user base.
October 14th, 2008 at 12:45 pm
I too prefer firefox, but IE is always on every computer, it is difficult to avoid not supporting IE.
