StatCounter Says NO!

Folks,

A few months back, StatCounter was approached by an advertiser, offered lots of $$$, and asked to include a spyware cookie on all of our member sites…we refused on the spot.

You install StatCounter to track visitors to your site NOT to open yourself and your visitors up to being spied upon by phantom advertising corporations.

It appears, however, that other players in the world of webstats were happy to take up this offer…

We were shocked to discover just today that another well known stats provider is allowing up to 9 cookies to be installed in the browser of every visitor that hits one of their member websites. This means that the provider is making money by transmitting data on you and your visitors to a third party advertiser. Not only that, but to add insult to injury, the cookies are causing the member websites to load very slowly too.

In light of this, StatCounter wants to assure you that we track your visitors for you, only you and not any one else.

Which provider would you prefer??

StatCounter says No!

By the way, welcome to our new blog 😉

  6. Thanks for saying no! As someone well versed in computer service, spyware, and the like, I very much appreciate the fact that you chose to refuse the spyware. It’s probably very difficult to refuse the money, but I commend you for the willpower!
I’m also glad I didn’t go with the other ‘unnamed stat provider’. I’d be dropping their service immediately for that kind of stunt.

Thanks again for ‘statting my blog’!!

  7. Hey there

I really really love the statcounter stats that you provide for free. I have been using it for quite a while on my site.

I just checked the cookies (deleted etc) as I am also using another web stats provider… they were ok… I thought they would be, as they are also a small-ish company, but I had to be sure…

I think I know which other provider you are talking about… who gave in…

And they are NOT the only one… just mid last year, I was getting those advertising tracking cookies on my system (spyware) from one of the really large web stats providers (I was testing two of them, so I am not sure which one), but whoever thought that you cant measure web activity through cookies, you sooo can!! And I couldnt get rid of them. At all. They kept coming back and causing problems for my computer until I had to do a wipe of the hard drive.

So anyway, my story is – stick with the statcounter… they are one of a few companies with some integrity…

Thanks guys, for a good (and free) product.

I wish you could tell us who this other company was… I would love to know, although I am pretty sure it’s one of the big ones that advertise a lot…

  8. Great that you’re not doing what nobody should do, and it’s interesting that you felt the need to create a blog so that we can all tell you how great you are for doing the right thing… Thank you from us too!

Now, maybe you can fix your website so that the on-going log-in problems experienced by so many can be over come? There’s little point to continue using your GREAT counter services if after logging-in, then trying to enter the stat pages, your system takes us back to Square One: the log-in page. You have provided no support solution to this problem despite many comments on your support page. I know you provide a free service, and I appreciate it very much, but there’s little use for a free service that does not work.

I really hope you fix the problem then send us an email saying that you did so.

    THANKS!
    The Baker

    StatCounter Team Response:

    Hi Baker!

Really sorry to hear that you’ve been experiencing trouble with StatCounter.

As far as we can tell this is not a StatCounter issue. We think it may be something to do with individual browsers or other software on the affected computers. Because of this, we can only deal with these problems on a one-to-one basis. We will need to know precise details to be able to sort this out for you.

One of the team will be in touch with you by email shortly.

    Thanks!

  9. A good choice!
Noe I am so sick and tired of pop-up ads. The pinging-service I use now seems to deal with ad pop-up ads.

  11. Geez! I’m glad that I made the right choice of using (and staying on with) statcounter whilst there are so many options available. Thanks for saying no to them. This will be a very good and strong reason for me to recommend you to the folks!
